Imagine, on a balmy Sunday afternoon, with nothing better to do, that you find yourself entirely equidistant between sunny Exmouth and the thoroughly pleasant – if not slightly platitudinous – middle-class retirement capital of Devon, Sidmouth. Imagine you have a spare hour or two, and imagine, just for a second, that you have an insatiable desire to remove all your clothes and stroll around (and quite possibly cartwheel!) in full public view; then Budleigh Salterton Nudist Beach might just have the answer!
The beach itself is covered with very pebbley pebbles, so you’ll definitely need your bestest blankets for buttock protection. It slopes rather steeply too, so your nether-bits will be covered by sea-water only a few paces from the shoreline.
Some years ago the local council erected signs informing the general public that nude bathing was, in fact, permitted, but only, we think, to deflect complaints from those conservative, right-wing, textile wearing weirdos who might accidentally wander into the area traditionally used by naked folks.
At weekends, the nudist beach is well-used by couples, families and singles of all ages, and reports continue to suggest that there are currently no problems with inappropriate behaviour; particularly in the area of the beach closer to the town. And due to it’s proximity to the town itself, this is NOT one of those beaches that attract scores of wobbly, overly-tanned, middle aged men with binoculars! Phew….
During the week and outside the high season, naked folks are likely to be oldies – reflecting the nature of a town popular as a retirement destination.
Overall, its a great place to free your inner nudie, but as we always advise, please respect the fact that some people still like to wear clothes (weird, huh?!); so don’t flash your flaps at those Barbour-wearing Labrador walkers, OK?!
On the map, look for the heart-shaped bum !!
Budleigh Salterton is reached by the B3178 from Exmouth or (in the opposite direction) from the A3052 and B3178 from Sidmouth. When in the town, the largest car park is just inland from the Eastern end of the beach off Salting Hill- but this is at the opposite end of the sea front, and some distance – although a level walk – from the nudist beach.
There is a smaller car park in the town itself (off Fore Street), but it tends to fill up quickly and is limited to three hours stay. Another car park is situated off Station Road, beyond the town centre and yet further from the sea front.
The nearest access (on foot) to the naturist section of the beach is via Steamer Steps at the end of Rolle Road. The nudist beach is a few hundred metres to the west of this point.
There are no facilities at the nudie end of the beach, but you can get all the essentials in Budleigh Salterton itself. However, if you are one of those hipster, city-based, only-shop-at-Waitrose types, I strongly suggest that you bring your own lightly-massaged Balinese langoustines and oak-scented vintage sourdough with you. Fab!
